_ 2018 _

The earliest records of a funerary urn’s existence date back to 7000 BC in China. Since then, few modifications have been experienced by this object throughout its history. Changes in form, material and ornament can be observed, but its usage and the way in which we relate to it, remain intact.

It is perplexing that in mexican culture, where approach towards death is so unique, options are limited to generic containers, industrial finishings and impersonal engravings.

It is from this uneasiness that URNS is born. A project created by Shelf, inviting thirteen artists and designers from diverse fields to present an object that beyond being perfectly useful, inspires us to question our own relationship with the afterlife.

INFINITO

Iker Ortiz presents this piece drawing inspiration from three elements, powerful symbols of the infinite, as the human soul is. Designed in white corian and brass, it is destined to contain the resulting ashes from a cremation.

The Circle. Universal symbol of eternity and perfection used by many faiths to represent the wholeness of the universe and infinite energy. It connects us with protection, equality and at the same time with constant movement and change, an essential part of life.

The Color White. Within it, all colors are contained and yet, it is the least aggressive, the most neutral and protective. Always related to pureness, it exudes peace, cleanses and heals.

The Color Gold. The color associated with sunlight, purifying sacred fire, as well as spiritual light that provides wisdom. Related to abundance and power, it is a color that revitalizes, inspires and speaks to us about life and rebirth.

URNS, featuring INFINITO, was presented by Shelf during ZONA MACO Art Fair, 2018 Edition.
