Architect-turned-fashion designer Vanessa Guckel approached Iker Ortiz, proposing a collaboration in order to create the first line of jewelry for her brand, CIHUAH.

Joining visions for this project was a natural match, given both designers’ interest in the interplay between architectural concepts and fashion. Unique and striking, the result was SUBLIMATION.

Vanessa was repeatedly hospitalized for morphology issues and for a long time, she lived with metal structures inserted into her spine, suffering from physical anomalies that did not fit societal norms and stereotypes. Using the original titanium pieces that she had in her back for many years, the idea was to provide them with another function and representation.

Iker, inspired by this concept, conceived a groundbreaking design proposition transforming what were once orthopedic implants into an exceptional jewelry collection. He embedded diamonds into them as well, completing the beauty-sublimation process that these pieces experienced.

An outstanding enterprise, this collection stands as a detonator of conversation advocating for tolerance and acceptance of physical difference. Moreover, it challenges an industry that bears the responsibility for creating standards of beauty.

SUBLIMATION was presented by CIHUAH at the Frida Kahlo Museum in 2018.
